Yamaha's first litre-class four-stroke superbike, an air/oil-cooled 16-valve four in a low steel frame built around two large side tubes. It was aimed at big-bike power with surprisingly light, quick handling, and was rated at around 235 km/h. It was soon overshadowed in sales by Kawasaki's GPz900R but earned a following as a sports tourer.
